The "Brat"-tastic Bunch

Perhaps whatever supposedly is ailing the summer box office caught up to broadcast TV last week. Viewership was down, significantly in some cases, except at ABC, where a bunch of behavioral problems saved the day.

The two-hour premiere of the reality show Brat Camp, in which acting-out adolescents are whipped into shape in the wilderness, struck out in front of 10.4 million, the second most watched opener of the off-season behind ABC's Dancing with the Stars, per Nielsen Media Research. In the weekly rankings, Brat Camp was the fourth-most watched show.

"Most watched show" was a relative term in a week in which CBS' numbers were down 25 percent from the same time last year, NBC's were down 7 percent and Fox's were down 4 percent. For the summer to date, only ABC and Fox are up from 2004.

Typical of the summer duds was CBS' Rock Star: INXS, which got off to a lousy start in its search for a new lead singer on Monday night (44th place, 5.5 million), perked up on Tuesday (34th place, 6.1 million), then fell to Hit Me Baby One More Time depths on Wednesday (61st place, 4.7 million).

Meanwhile, the Bad News Bears promotional vehicle that was baseball's All-Star Game and pregame show gave Fox its lone Top 10 finishes, such as they were. The game itself was the least watched one on record (second place, 12.3 million), down 12 percent from last year's contest, the previous ignoble record holder. ESPN, however, wasn't complaining about the interminable home-run derby, held the day before the big game, which averaged 6.3 million long-ball fans.

Elsewhere:

Where was the heat last week? In outer space. Sci Fi Channel's Battlestar Galactica embarked on its second season with record ratings (3.1 million viewers).
Perhaps it's not quite hot, but Fox's Hell's Kitchen (25th place, 6.7 million) is on a steady boil. And among younger viewers, who made it a Top 5 hit in the 18-49 demo, it's on a roiling boil.
So, it looks like CBS' Big Brother 6 is a habit on Tuesday (10th place, 8.3 million) and Thursday (16th place, 7.7 million), and an afterthought on Saturday (53rd place, 5 million).
In a Saturday night battle of the network movie libraries, an ABC rebroadcast of The Princess Diaries (26th place, 6.6 million) stomped all over an NBC rebroadcast of the made-in-Hollywood Godzilla (72nd place, 4.1 million).
HBO's Entourage got picked up for a third season, and, in apparent celebration, almost--almost--expanded its exclusive ranks to 2 million viewers (1.968 million).
Perhaps to know him well is to love him: NBC aired three episodes of Joey back-to-back-back, and instead of repelling customers, the mini-marathon picked up supporters, with the final episode the most watched of them all (62nd place, 4.7 million).

Overall, CBS eked out a win in total viewers, averaging a paltry 6.7 million. Fox, powered by the All-Star Game, won the 18-to-49 category.

NBC claimed second in viewers (6.2 million), followed by ABC (6 million) and Fox (5.95 million). UPN (2.5 million) surpassed the WB (1.9 million).

Here's a look of the 10 most watched prime-time shows for the week ended Sunday, according to Nielsen Media Research:

1. CSI, CBS, 12.9 million viewers
2. Major League Baseball All-Star Game, Fox, 12.3 million viewers
3. Without a Trace, CBS, 11.7 million viewers
4. Brat Camp, ABC, 10.4 million viewers
5. NCIS, CBS, 9.3 million viewers
6. Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, NBC, 9.1 million viewers
7. Major League Baseball All-Star Pregame, Fox, 9 million viewers
8. Law & Order, NBC, 8.9 million viewers
9. 60 Minutes, CBS, 8.7 million viewers
10. Big Brother 6 (Tuesday), CBS, 8.3 million viewers
