Brangelina Checks in with Sudan
The Jolie-Pitt Foundation is at it again.
A few weeks after returning from a goodwill trip to Chad to meet with refugees from Sudan's troubled Darfur region, Angelina Jolie is giving credit where credit's due.
The charitable organization the newly minted mother of four started with boyfriend Brad Pitt has donated $100,000 to Direct Change, a nonprofit that raises financial support for grassroots projects in Africa.
The Jolie-Pitt dough has been earmarked for what will be the first modern medical facility in Duk County, Sudan, the Duk Lost Boys Clinic, which is scheduled to open later this spring and serve upwards of 150,000 people.
"Words cannot express my gratitude and gratitude of the people of Duk County," John Dau, the director of Direct Change's Sudan Project, said in a statement. Dau was also featured in the documentary God Grew Tired of Us, executive-produced by Pitt and based on Dau's memoir of the same name that told the story of the "Lost Boys" of Sudan.
"Angelina Jolia and Brad Pitt demonstrate the American spirit of generosity. Hopefully, their donation will inspire others to join with us to rebuild southern Sudan," Dau said.
According to Direct Change, Pitt and Jolie learned about the Duk clinic at the Hollywood premiere of the film in January. Jolie then made the trek to N'Djamena, Chad—about two miles from the Sudan border—in late February, her third trip to the area on behalf of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
To track Jolie and Pitt's travels in recent years, just follow the money trail. And the pitter-patter of little feet.
When the Jolie-Pitt Foundation was established in September, the comely do-gooders immediately funneled $2 million to Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children. And last fall, Jolie set up the Maddox Jolie Project to make good on her promise to contribute $1.3 million toward forest conservation and poverty alleviation in the northwest region of Cambodia, where Jolie adopted Maddox in 2002.
Pitt and Jolie also left behind hundreds of thousands of dollars when they left Namibia after the birth of daughter Shiloh, with the funds supposedly headed toward the maternity wards in the country's state hospitals. Then there was the $4.1 million the proud parents reportedly received from People for the privilege of publishing the first photos of Shiloh—that sum is said to have gone straight to charity, as well.
Then, when the whole family—which then consisted of mom, dad, Maddox, Zahara and Shiloh—was in India last month, where Jolie was filming the Daniel Pearl biopic A Mighty Heart, Jolie and Pitt gave $100,000 to the eponymous foundation set up in honor of the slain Wall Street Journal reporter, who was murdered by terrorists in Pakistan.
While it's a given that Jolie and Pitt are gonna keep on giving, the only question that remains right now is whether some of that foundation money is now headed for Vietnam.
Jolie, with her other adopted children in tow, picked up the latest addition to her brood, Pax Thien Jolie, last Thursday in Ho Chi Minh City. The group flew out of Hanoi on Wednesday to rejoin Pitt, who remained on Shiloh watch back in Los Angeles.
