Bowie Undergoes Heart Surgery
Turns out a pain in the neck was the least of David Bowie's problems.
The rock 'n' roll showman, who bagged his European tour last week because of what was said to be a pinched nerve in the shoulder, underwent emergency heart surgery to clear "an acutely blocked artery," his camp revealed Thursday.
The procedure, an angioplasty, was performed last week in Germany, where Bowie had been hospitalized for the nerve problem following a show at a festival there.
A statement from Bowie's rep Thursday said the 57-year-old was back home in New York and doing well.
"Can't wait to be fully recovered and get back to work again," Bowie said in the statement. "I tell you what, though, I won't be writing a song about this one."
Bowie had faced harsh reality throughout his Reality tour. In Miami, a concert was canceled after a stagehand was killed in a preshow accident. In Norway, the "Space Oddity" himself took a lollipop in the eye--a sucker punch courtesy of a so-called fan.
Bowie had 11 dates left on the Euro leg of the tour when it was said a nerve seized up on him June 25 during a show in Scheessel, Germany.
Bowie was taken to a Hamburg hospital immediately following the concert. At some point while being examined, doctors discovered the artery blockage. Days later, the Reality tour was officially off, although at the time its cancellation was blamed on "the unpredictable nature of the [pinched nerve]."
Hearts are also tricky things. Drew Carey, Regis Philbin and Vice President Dick Cheney are among the notables who have required the artery-declogging services of the angioplasty.
Less invasive than heart bypass, the angioplasty allows patients to be up and walking in a matter of hours following surgery, and they typically require no more than a one-night hospital stay, according to HeartSite.com.
Until his recent maladies, Bowie had been one of the more durable veteran rock acts around.
A 1996 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Bowie's career dates back to the 1960s when he broke through with the influential hit "Space Oddity." Other key songs in his genre- and gender-bending canon include "Young Americans," "Let's Dance" and "Fame."
Bowie has been married to the supermodel Iman since 1992. They have one daughter, three-year-old Alexandria.
