"Boston Legal" a Fall Fashion?

Boston Legal reportedly is about to go where William Shatner has gone but a couple of times before.

ABC will renew the legal drama, starring Shatner and James Spader, for a third season, the Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

Shatner previously lasted for five seasons on the Los Angeles police beat on T.J. Hooker, and three seasons on the bridge of the USS Enterprise on Star Trek.

ABC would not confirm or deny the Boston Legal report, noting that its fall pick-ups will be announced en masse on May 16, when its 2006-07 schedule is unveiled.

Boston Legal has distinguished itself among ABC shows by being neither a really big hit, à la Desperate Housewives and Grey's Anatomy, nor a really big bomb, à la just about everything the network airs Thursday, Friday or Saturday.

In the latest Nielsen Media Research rankings, Boston Legal ranked 31st, its 10.12 million viewers putting it just behind a Tuesday night CSI: Miami repeat (30th place, 10.14 million) and just ahead of Ghost Whisperer (32nd place, 10 million).

Overall, the legal eagles of Crane, Poole & Schmidt are averaging 10.4 million weekly clients, a double-digit drop from last season when their show spent part of the year on Sundays after Desperate Housewives.

Shatner and Spade won Emmys last fall for playing their Boston Legal selves. The two previously took trophies for handling the same characters on The Practice.

In other ratings-related news from the TV week ended Sunday:

Desperate Housewives (fifth place, 21.3 million) reasserted itself as Sunday's most watched show, edging out network comrade Grey's Anatomy (sixth place, 20.8 million). American Idol was American Idol. An awful lot of people watched the Tuesday night sing-off (first place, 28.7 million); an awful lot of people watched the Wednesday night contestant-off (second place, 28.3 million). It's official: Football-desperate fans will watch paint dry and/or the NFL draft, whichever looks best on HDTV. ESPN averaged a relatively whopping 5.3 million viewers for its Saturday marathon devoted to the latter event. NBC has announced fall pickups for three medium-sized hits: Medium (33rd place, 9.8 million); Crossing Jordan (37th place, 9.3 million); and, Las Vegas (46th place, 8.3 million). All 37 Law & Orders have been renewed for the fall, as well. Things have gotten so bad for ABC's Commander in Chief (64th place, 6.5 million) on Thursday that President Bush is now having a good year by comparison. Rosie O'Donnell's introduction as the new View cohost boosted the 33rd Annual Daytime Emmy Awards (70th place, 6.1 million) all the way to the show's, well, second-lowest ratings on record. So, What About Brian (79th place, 5.4 million)? Not much, really.

In the first leg of the May sweeps, CBS earned bragging rights as the most watched network among total viewers, averaging 13.1 million; Idol-powered Fox claimed the title of most watched network among 18- to 49-year-old viewers.

Thanks to its extensive collection of Deal or No Deal briefcases, NBC (8.9 million) bested ABC (8.2 million) for third in the total-viewers race. ABC took third in the 18-to-49 demo, followed by NBC.
