Bobby Out on Bail
Bobby Brown took his sweet time surrendering to authorities Sunday night.
The R&B singer was ordered to report to an Atlanta-area jail before midnight for fingerprinting or else face a warrant for his arrest. Brown made it with only four hours to spare and was then released on $2,000 bail.
The court-ordered showdown was the result of a Dec. 7 domestic spat between Brown and his missus, Whitney Houston.
The couple had reportedly hoped to work the matter out privately, but in May, a judge ruled that there was enough evidence for Brown to go to trial on a misdemeanor battery charge alleging he hit Houston in the face during a dispute at their Alpharetta, Georgia, home.
Brown, who had been in Europe accompanying Houston on a tour, turned up to be processed at the Fulton County Jail Sunday night around 8 p.m.
"He arrived at the jail, was photographed and fingerprinted and posted his bond," Lieutenant Clarence Huber of the Fulton County Sheriff's Department told the Associated Press.
If convicted, the onetime New Edition member could be sentenced to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine, but charges against first-time domestic violence offenders are often dismissed if the defendant gets counseling.
Some therapy might not be a bad idea for the embattled entertainer, who spent a night in jail last month for missing three consecutive child-support payments (totaling more than $60,000) to ex-partner Kim Ward.
Prior to that big house visit, Brown spent a month in the slammer in February for multiple probation violations stemming from a January 2003 drunken-driving conviction.
