Blink Gets the Staind Out
All puns aside, Blink-182 blew onto the charts last week, scoring the band's first-ever number one debut with its fourth studio release, Take Off Your Pants & Jacket, and erasing Staind's three-week chart-topping run.
Goosing their first-week sales with a series of cross-country in-store appearances and a performance on The Late Show with David Letterman, the pop-rock punksters sold nearly 350,000 copies of their new album for the week ended Sunday, according to SoundScan numbers. With the band popping up for some shows on the Warped Tour, which launches Friday, expect sales to remain solid for several weeks.
But while the opening numbers were good, Blink still has a long way to go to match the sales of its previous studio album, Enema of the State, which has to date sold over 4 million copies.
Meanwhile, the pretty boys of Sugar Ray scored the week's only other top 10 debut, dropping in at number six with their new self-titled album. The Orange County, California, outfit, currently on tour with Uncle Kracker, has enjoyed a series of crossover hits in the past few years, including "Fly," "Every Morning," "Someday," "Falls Apart" and now "When It's Over," which the band played last week during halftime of Game 5 of the NBA Finals.
With Blink on top, Staind's Break the Cycle fell to number two with solid sales of 221,000. The remaining top 10 reruns were: Destiny's Child's Survivor jumping two spots to number three, the Moulin Rouge soundtrack holding at number four, St. Lunatic's Free City at five, Now That's What I Call Music! Vol. 6 at seven, Radiohead's Amnesiac dropping six spots to eight, Tool's Lateralus at nine, and Weezer's self-titled album (aka the Green Album) reentering at 10.
Two top 10 debuts from last week's charts dropped: Jessica Simpson's Irresistible fell from six to 12, while Turk's watched Young & Thuggin' plummeted NASDQ-style from nine all the way down to 31.
The R&B group Silk proved it still has the touch as Love Session bowed at number 20. Following close behind is former Firm rapper AZ at 23 with 9 Lives.
Other notable new chart entries included Brit faves Travis at 39 with The Invisible Band, Electric Light Orchestra's Zoom at 94, the soundtrack to MTV's Hip-Hopera: Carmen (featuring Destiny's Child, Missy Elliott and Da Brat) at 138 and Brian Setzer's '68 Comeback Special: Ignition! at 152.
Also worth noting is a boost for several bands on the just-launched, Black Sabbath-headlining Ozzfest tour. Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory jumped four spots to 13, Drowning Pool's Sinner was up nine to 72 and Disturbed's Sickness climbed six to 89.
With the summer tour season in full swing and kiddies out of school and heading to the mall, expect several high-profile new releases to make major bows in the weeks to come, including Sisqó's latest, Return of Dragon, and the Eminem-led D12's Devil's Night, which will try to take out Blink 182's next week.
