Big Pussy Whacks Plea

Time will tell if Big Pussy was really a wise guy.

Former Sopranos star Vincent Pastore has rejected a plea deal offered by New York City prosecutors that would've seen him avoid jail and do a mere five days of community service for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend.

The burly thesp, who played goodfella Salvatore "Big Pussy" Bonpensiero on HBO's hit Mafia series before getting whacked after snitching on Tony and the gang, turned up in Manhattan Criminal Court Thursday for hearing on four misdemeanor charges of roughing up ex-fiancée Lisa Regina.

Pastore, 58, faces two counts of assault, another for attempted assault and one count of harassment stemming from an alleged April incident in a parked car in--appropriately enough--Little Italy.

Prosecutors allege Pastore punched Regina in the back of the head, then grabbed her by the hair and pulled her down, smashing her eye into the vehicle's gear shift. He then allegedly jerked her by the arm and threw her backwards out of the car before driving off.

Regina, 44, was treated for cuts and bruises at a nearby hospital.

No word what led to the altercation, but media reports indicate the ex-TV mobster was angry because she was running late. The two had been planning to tie the knot in June.

At his arraignment on Apr. 5, Pastore pleaded not guilty to the charges. And as of yesterday, the actor wasn't backing down.

Asked by reporters on his way out why he didn't accept a plea bargain from the district attorney's office, which also would've required him to attend a batterer's program, Pastore simply replied, "Because I didn't do anything."

Pastore's attorney, Dominic Barbara, could not be reached for comment Friday.

The case is now expected to go before a jury, with Judge Larry Stephen scheduling pretrial motions for June 30. If convicted, Pastore could be sentenced to a year in the Big House.

Before embarking on an acting career in the late '80s, Pastore ran nightclubs for 20 years in New Rochelle, New York. Despite his Sopranos demise, Pastore resurfaced in the fifth season in an episode featuring all the ghosts of Tony's past.

His most recent film credits include Corky Romano, Riding in Cars with Boys and last year's Shark Tale.
