Bennifer Bomb a Hit at Razzies
Perhaps now the healing can begin.
Gigli, the movie nation's favorite punching bag, got its lights knocked out one (hopefully) last time Saturday, named Worst Picture and disparaged in many other ways at the 24th Annual Golden Raspberry Awards, getting in the last word on the past year in bad film.
The hitman comedy-drama scored in just about every anti-Oscar category in which it was nominated, going six for nine. Stars Ben Affleck, Jennifer Lopez and writer-director Martin Brest were all multiple Razzie recipients.
With seven Razzies each, only bad-movie immortals Showgirls and Battlefield Earth claimed more dishonors than Gigli.
Affleck was named Worst Actor, a title he came about through no small amount of hard work. In addition to Gigli, the onetime Oscar winner also was dissed for his leading-man work in Daredevil and Paycheck.
Ex-fiancée Lopez was named Worst Actress, downing two-thirds of the lead cast of Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz) in the process.
Together, the phenomenon formerly known as Bennifer were dinged by Razzie voters as Worst Screen Couple.
Brest was dishonored for writing the line "Gobble, gobble" in Gigli, and also for directing it on screen.
The only Gigli players to emerge from the box-office bomb somewhat unscathed were Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Lanie Kazan. Each was a Razzie nominee in the supporting acting categories; each was passed over for the spray-painted golf ball (aka, the Razzie, estimated street value $4.89).
Razzie favorite Sylvester Stallone defeated Pacino and Walken in the Worst Supporting Actor race. The least action hero was picked on for his record 10th Razzie on the strength, or perceived lack thereof, of his multiple cameos in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over.
Demi Moore's Charlie's Angels comeback ushered her return to the winner's circle. Moore was named Worst Supporting Actress over the likes of Kazan, earning her first worthless mantle piece since her 1998 Razzie for G.I. Jane.
The Gigli juggernaut prevented Moore's off-screen beau, Ashton Kutcher, from scoring Razzies as both Worst Screen Actor and one-half of the Worst Screen Couple.
As has become tradition, the Razzies, voted upon by dues-paying members of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, are presented the day before the Oscars in a Santa Monica ceremony typically attended by absolutely none of the nominees.
