Beckhams Finally Come to America

Yesterday the world, tomorrow the Galaxy...today America.

Seven months to the day that David and Victoria Beckham announced they would be upending their camera-ready brood from the heart of England to the heart of Hollywood, moving day has finally arrived.

"We are so excited about America," the artist known as Posh Spice said on The Today Show Thursday. "We want to embrace the culture with open arms. This is a huge move for us, for our children. You know, David takes his career very seriously. This is a big, big deal for us."

As it is for the paparazzi.

In anticipation of the Beckhams' arrival, photographers have been camped out at the British Airways terminal of LAX since Wednesday morning. But they and the rest of the celebrity-hungry gawkers won't have much longer to wait—Posh, Becks, Brooklyn, Romeo and Cruz were snapped leaving London's Heathrow Airport for the States earlier Thursday.

But despite the fever-pitch levels of expectation for the supercouple's arrival, Victoria thinks the interest in their initiation to the Hollywood scene will soon die down.

"Not as many people know who we are here," she told Today. "It might be a bit crazy when we first get here, because we're new, but then I think people will probably realize, you know what, I'm actually quite boring.

"I think everyone else's lives are probably, I wouldn't say more interesting, we have a great life, but we are relatively private."

The 33-year-old once and future Spice Girl said that she and her 32-year-old heartthrob hubby would be happy to leave the snap-happy paparazzi in the more capable hands of their famous friends.

"There are so many really famous people in L.A.," she told the morning show. "I mean, we always joke about it and say, you know, you got Brad Pitt, you got Angelina Jolie, you got Tom, you got Katie. I mean, we're just Victoria and David."

Victoria thinks not only do the other, more established—at least in America—stars warrant greater coverage than she and her husband but their images tend to be a tad more photogenic.

When asked by Matt Lauer whether the scads of photos featuring her world-famous perma-scowl are an accurate reflection of her mood, Victoria said the tabloid editors were more to blame than she was.

"They select the pictures they want. They make you look the way they want you to look. It's an image. I think there are some people that would be quite devastated should I actually smile or look pleasant, for that fact."

Still, Mrs. Beckham is more than aware of her standoffish image and said in an interview with W magazine she's "going to try and smile more for America."

"I think people are really going to see me for the first time," she told the magazine. "I think they have this impression that I'm this miserable cow who doesn't smile. But I'm actually quite the opposite."

Luckily for her, she'll have plenty of opportunity  in the coming months to practice the fine art of facial expression. Several British papers have reportedly relocated teams of paparazzi to Los Angeles for the sole purpose of covering the Beckham beat.

And the first stop for the picture takers will no doubt be the Beckhams' new $22 million, 13,000-square-foot, six-bedroom Mediterranean-style Beverly Hills home. Despite the fact that the abode comes equipped with a pool, tennis courts and screening room, Beckham told W that it's surprisingly practical, claiming she and David "didn't want anything too huge, too fancy, too ostentatious."

However, one major perk, by anyone's standards, is the proximity to A-list pals Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, whose friendship with the Beckhams is subject to constant speculation.

"People often try and get me to say...you know, there's been so much made of the Scientology, the this, the that. They do their thing, we do our thing," Victoria told Today. "They are genuinely lovely people. Wonderful family."

David echoed the sentiments to W, telling the magazine as far as reports that the Los Angeles Galaxy's newest $250 million recruit would also be Scientology's, "Tom has never even talked to us about it, much less tried to push it on us."

Still, despite all the hype surrounding David and Victoria's arrival to the States, the duo, if not the press, aren't losing sight of what brought them to Los Angeles in the first place.

On Friday morning, the right-footed soccer hero is set to be formally introduced as a member of the team during a press conference at his new L.A. home field, the Home Depot Center in Carson. Beckham, whose move to America could be worth upwards of $250 million in contract and endorsement money, will also be presented with his personalized Galaxy uniform, which itself was revamped and unveiled earlier this week.

"I do believe I can take it to another level," David told W of his hopes for the sport. "I wouldn't have taken up the challenge if I didn't believe I could have that effect."

He will take to the field with his new team on July 21, when he will match up against some familiar faces, and accents, playing in an exhibition game against England's Chelsea FC.

Before then, his wife will make her own informal debut in America, with an hourlong NBC documentary special, Victoria Beckham: Coming to America, set to air Monday.

Even with their current oversaturation in the pop-culture market, the Beckhams are keeping their profile in perspective.

"We're not out to be the most famous people in America," Victoria told W. "We're not looking at the move as boosting the brand. We're us, and we've got our kids. We're not aware of the madness going on around us. We kind of keep to ourselves, really."
