Beckham Rushes to Ailing Dad's Side

David Beckham is brushing up on his bedside manner.

The soccer star arrived in London Thursday after taking an overnight flight from Los Angeles to be by his father's side after the elder Beckham suffered a heart attack.

"His father had a heart attack," Beckham's agent, Simon Oliveira said. "David was made aware of it late last night. He caught the first available flight, and he'll be arriving in London around lunchtime."

Victoria Beckham did not travel with her husband, because she is currently working in Japan, a spokesman said. She was planning to fly to Britain to join him as soon as possible.

"Obviously, she has been informed of it, and she is concerned," the rep said.

Ted Beckham, 59, was said to be in stable condition at the London Chest Hospital, where he was in intensive care after undergoing surgery.

He was taken to the hospital by ambulance Wednesday night after complaining of chest pain.

In addition to the Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder, the elder Beckham has two daughters, Lynne and Joanne. He divorced his wife in 2002.

Father and son reportedly had a brief falling out after Ted Beckham published an unauthorized biography titled David Beckham: My Son in 2005, but they have since reconciled.

With David Beckham in London, his absence from the field won't be felt too keenly, as he has not played in a match for the Galaxy since Aug. 30, after injuring his knee.

If his soccer career's not going as well as it might, at least his fragrance line is a hit.

Intimately Beckham, the his-and-her scents developed by Posh and Becks, are off to a "very strong start" after debuting in the U.S. two weeks ago, according to Coty Beauty exec Stephen C. Mormoris.

Which should come as no surprise, really.

Brazilian soccer star Ronaldo may have been the first to take note of Beckham's appealing smell after exchanging shirts with his British opponent following the Brazil-England match in the 2002 World Cup.

"Normally when you swap shirts, especially after a game in the heat like that, they absolutely stink and are soaked in sweat," Ronaldo said. "So it was a surprise, to say the least, that Beckham's shirt smelled only of perfume."

Bottling that unique essence was simply the next logical step.
