Beckham Knee Injury Won't Affect L.A. Move

A knee injury apparently won't stop David Beckham from becoming the Galaxy's biggest star.

The celebrity athlete, who is due to join Los Angeles' Major League Soccer team this summer, was diagnosed with ligament damage to his right knee Sunday after limping off the field during the second half of a Real Madrid match.

Real Madrid manager Fabio Capello said Sunday that the injury "could be something important. We will have to see."

Additional tests on Monday indicated that the midfielder will be sidelined for about a month, eliminating his chances of being recalled to England's national team for the upcoming European Championship qualifiers.

Fortunately, the injury is not expected to impact the Beckham family's upcoming move to Los Angeles, where Beckham is scheduled to make his MLS debut sometime in August, after signing a five-year deal worth an estimated $250 million with the Galaxy in January.

"We do not expect this injury to affect his arrival in Los Angeles or his debut with the Galaxy," the team's general manager Alexi Lalas said Monday.

The injury is also unlikely to derail an upcoming NBC reality series documenting Victoria Beckham's relocation to the States. The network announced the as-yet untitled project last week, promising to "give viewers a glimpse into what makes Victoria so popular and admired as one of the most glamorous women in the world."

Beckham, who already operates a soccer academy in L.A., has said that while he hopes to increase the sport's visibility in the U.S., he does not have unrealistic expectations about his ability to do so.

"I'd be stupid to think I can make it as big as baseball, basketball and American football. That's not going to happen," he told London's Sun in a recent interview. "I'm not going there thinking I'm going to change everything. My aim is to help the kids in America enjoy [soccer].

"Probably half of America hasn't even heard of me," he added, somewhat modestly.

Luckily, Beckham won't be sidelined before he gets the chance to make a first impression.
