Usually, for the greatest game to ever hit the Internet, we guess the top movie of the weekend. And usually, it's something new. But with Superbad set to hold No. 1 over an unusually slow summer weekend, I thought I'd take a stab at a film that's been a roller-coaster ride from the start.
The Nanny Diaries was a hugely popular nonfiction book in the early 2000s, and after The Princess Diaries and The Devil Wears Prada outperformed industry expectations, a theatrical version of Diaries felt like a solid bet.
After years in development hell, the Miramax-Disney fallout and casting, production and editing issues, here we are in the last nonholiday weekend of the summer as The Nanny Diaries opens on roughly 1,500 screens. The film is extremely "New York" in its style and tone, references and cultural satire, which will no doubt alienate plenty of people. And despite some big names (Scarlett Jo, Chris Evans, Alicia Keys) and accomplished actooors (Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney), but no real proven box office draw, this will unfortunately fall flat.
Look for The Nanny Diaries to barely crack $9 million. And let's hurry up and roll out the fall movies already!
