Beasties' Tibetan Concert Goes Global
Lineups for the same-day June 13 shows in Chicago, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Sydney were announced today at a press conference in New York.
The Beasties, Vedder, Blondie and Live will star at the Chicago show.
Amsterdam concertgoers will get Rage Against the Machine, Ben Harper and the Clash's Joe Strummer, among others. In Sydney, Neil Finn (of Crowded House) is a main attraction; and in Tokyo, Audioactive is among headliners.
The fest was launched in 1996 in San Francisco, with follow-ups in New York (in 1997) and in Washington, D.C. (1998). This is the first time organizers will host simultaneous shows in four cities (in four different countries). The expansion--coming in the 50th anniversary year of the Chinese army incursion into Tibet--is to demonstrate worldwide support for the Tibetans, said Josh Schrei, of the sponsoring Milarepa Fund.
Last year's event raised $1.2 million for its Tibetan-boosting causes. The Beastie Boys' Adam Yauch--a driving force behind both the concert and the Milarepa Fund--said the Freedom Concert will go on as long as there's a need.
"We'll probably continue to do whatever seems most helpful," Yauch said. "If that means continuing to do concerts."
Scion rocker Sean Lennon, who played the San Francisco and Washington fests (but is not set for one this year), defended concerts as useful political tools. "The policy of our government is made by what the people think," Lennon said.
Bits from all four concerts will be strung together for a two-hour syndicated radio show, to be hosted by Jon Stewart. The Daily Show comic made clear Friday the motives behind his involvement with the cause.
"I really wanted to meet the Beastie Boys," he said.
