"Baywatch" Moving Down Under

"We'll take it if you don't want it."

Those were the sentiments of the Australian Gold Coast tourist resort, which reportedly struck a deal with Baywatch producers to relocate the worldwide hit lifeguard soap there.

The agreement comes just days after residents of Avalon--a beach town further south, nearer Sydney--staged a rally to protest the relocation of the David Hasselhoff-starring series from Malibu to their community.

Reuters reported that Bob Gibbs, tourism minister for the Aussie state of Queensland, had reached an "in-principle" deal with Batwatch honcho Gregory Bonann--the Venice Beach lifeguard-turned-producer who was told by near-riotous Avalon citizens Wednesday to "just get out and don't come back."

"Baywatch is Gold Coast bound after very productive talks with Mr. Bonann, who is very excited about the show coming to Queensland," read a statement from Gibbs.

"This in-principle deal represents a marvelous opportunity for Queensland and the Gold Coast to promote itself as a tourist destination in the 144 countries and 32 languages around the world where Baywatch is screened," he added.

Gibbs estimated the filming would pump at least $12.4 million U.S. into the Gold Coast economy a year, not counting the promotional benefits to tourism.

Seeking to rejuvenate their aging series, and having enjoyed taping two episodes of the Pamela Anderson launch pad in Avalon last October, Bonann and his crew were purportedly near an agreement with Avalon city authorities to move the series to the suburban beach town.

The town's residents, however, opposed this, citing numerous gripes from the October shoot: Environmental damage. Security guards keeping residents away from the beach. A surfer reportedly marched away from the filming. Local skateboarding youths told to keep it down while the hard-bodied cast got their beauty sleep.

"We will not go where we are clearly not wanted," said Bonnan, after getting an earful from the angry Aussie crowd Wednesday.
