Basinger Going Courting in February
Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin have gone with Plan B.
Instead of choosing to get it over with in January, the warring exes opted Tuesday for a Feb. 16 trial date for Basinger to face contempt charges for allegedly getting in the way of Baldwin's court-ordered visitation privileges with their daughter, Ireland.
Basinger, who did not appear in court when she pleaded not guilty a week ago to 12 misdemeanor counts of criminal contempt, has already waived her right to attend her trial next year, according to the actress' lawyer, Neal Hersh.
Her ex-husband, on the other hand, is expected to take the stand, Baldwin's attorney, Vicki Greene, said. Both Greene and Hersh are due in court Wednesday to argue pretrial motions.
Last month, Baldwin accused Basinger of purposely making their 10-year-old child unavailable for visits last year, a violation of an agreement made in 2004. The 30 Rock star stated that his former missus neglected to inform him that she'd be going out of town for work at one point, depriving him of the opportunity to care for Ireland at his Los Angeles home. (Baldwin's home base is in New York, while Basinger lives with Ireland in L.A.)
Another time, Baldwin said, their daughter was injured and required medical treatment and Basinger didn't inform him of that, either.
The two sides supposedly arrived at a joint custody truce in 2004 but tempers flared again last year when Baldwin alleged Basinger was trying to turn Ireland against him and requested that his ex-wife be forced to undergo psychological evaluation.
The non-jury trial will be presided over by L.A. Superior Court Commissioner Maren E. Nelson, who has been refereeing the duo's custody crises for what actually has been about one year and what seems like five.
Basinger, whose divorce was made final in 2002, is looking at a maximum 60 days in jail and a $12,000 fine if she's convicted on all 12 counts.
Meanwhile, L.A.-area family therapists are seeing dollar signs.
