Basinger, Baldwin: Divorce
The Oscar-winning actress filed the paperwork Friday in Los Angeles Superior Court, citing "irreconcilable differences" with her actor-husband, after seven years of marriage.
According to court papers, the couple have been separated since December 5. Their 5-year-old daughter, Ireland, has been in Basinger's custody at a confidential location since December 12. The news of the breakup confirms E! Online columnist Ted Casablanca's report on Thursday that the couple had, in fact, split up.
Baldwin--the suave, 42-year-old head of the Baldwin brothers clan and star of the just released State and Main--and Basinger--the 47-year-old actress who first shot to stardom with the steamy 9 1/2 Weeks--fell in love in 1990, on the set of the The Marrying Man. The romantic comedy stars Baldwin as a rich playboy who falls for a nightclub singer (Basinger) during his Las Vegas bachelor party.
The pair tied the knot August 19, 1993, in East Hampton, New York. Some 60 guests, including Billy Joel and Paul Newman, attended the paparazzi-plagued ceremony, held on a beach near Baldwin's hometown of Massapequa.
"Marriage changes things because there's a lot more at stake," Baldwin once told Redbook magazine. "You can't get too toxic because you have to live together. No one can reach for the nuclear button too quickly. In past relationships, before I was married, I'd go back to my apartment, and she went back to hers, and it was over.
"Marriage is different. The stakes are higher, so everybody cools it. You've got the bomb, and I've got the bomb, so let's not go throwing them around too quickly."
Basinger gave birth to their daughter, Ireland Eliesse, on October 23, 1995. Three years later, the platinum-tressed star nabbed a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role as the Veronica Lake-impersonating call girl in L.A. Confidential.
The pair endured their share of setbacks. In 1993, Basinger was ordered to pay the producers of the film Boxing Helena $8 million for breach of contract, which led her to file for bankruptcy.
But Basinger told People magazine in 1999 she was "enormously happy" in her marriage to Baldwin. A year earlier, the twosome was profiled in the magazine as one of Hollywood's lasting couples.
"It's like, 'No matter what comes down, it's you and me, pal, together,' " Basinger told Ladies' Home Journal. "He trusts me to the ends of the world, and I trust him."
There has been no official comment from either Basinger or Baldwin's camp on the split.
This is Basinger's second divorce. The actress married makeup artist Ron Britton in 1980, and they divorced in 1989. Baldwin was engaged to actress Janine Turner in 1983, but the wedding was later canceled.
