Barry Manilow Out of Hospital
Looks like Barry Manilow made it out of the hospital in one piece.
The "Copacabana" crooner was rushed to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs Saturday in high fibrillation, according to his publicist. He was discharged 24 hours later after doctors conducted a battery of tests and procedures and his heart rate returned to normal.
On Monday, Manilow's rep chalked the chest pains up to stress, releasing a statement saying the 57-year-old singer had just returned from two tension-filled days of arbitration in New York over control of his stage musical, Harmony.
The show's pre-Broadway tune-up run in Philadelphia was scuttled last November, leading Manilow and cowriter Bruce Sussman to blame the abrupt closing on producer Mark Schwartz's financial mismanagement.
Manilow and Sussman sued Schwartz for the rights to the show, about the real-life Comedian Harmonists sextet, a group of singers in pre-World War II Berlin. The revue had received mixed reviews upon its initial tryout run in La Jolla, California, in 1997 but has since been retooled with an eye for Broadway.
Arbitrators will decide Harmony's fate later this week.
"This is the true definition of heartbreak," Manilow said in the statement. "It literally broke my heart to sit for two days and watch these beautiful people of the creative team testify because of the incompetence of this man who brought down our show," he said referring to Schwartz.
Attempts to contact Schwartz were unsuccessful.
It's the second tough break Manilow's suffered in the past few months. Last June, the showman broke his nose after accidentally walking into a wall at his Palm Springs home.
A Grammy, Emmy and Tony winner, Manilow achieved his greatest fame in the 1970s for such syrupy hits as "Mandy," "Can't Smile Without You," "Lonely Together" and "Looks Like We Made It."
He recently produced old pal Bette Midler's Grammy-nominated album Bette Midler Sings the Rosemary Clooney Songbook. His next releases, the double-CD 2 Nights Live! and double-DVD Ultimate Manilow!, will hit stores April 6.
