A Backstreet Nature Boy
The nature-loving popster says he wants the people of Kentucky to tune into "their own back yards," and to help foster environmental awareness in his home state, he has formed a foundation called Just Within Reach.
Appearing at a press conference in Lexington, Kentucky, Wednesday, Richardson told about 20 journalists that he was forming the foundation to focus on the state's environmental issues.
Instead of "sitting around on my butt worrying about problems, I thought I'd use my status as a celebrity to ask more questions and maybe change things," said Richardson, 29, who recently informed the world that his boy band does more than sing and dance--"We've got a brain, too."
Brain activity aside, Richardson said it was his recent marriage to dancer Kristin Willits that inspired him to ponder nature. "We want to have children...I want them to grow up healthy and have clean water to drink."
During the news conference, experts briefed Richardson on environmental problems in the state, including an October spill of 250 million gallons of coal sludge.
"We need to recycle, turn lights off, maybe drive hybrid cars and heat our houses with solar energy," he said.
Richardson said Just Within Reach will be run by himself, his wife, his brother, Tim, and friends Jim and Vicki Hanna of Los Angeles. The foundation's abbreviation, JWR match the initials of Richardson's father, Jerald Wayne Richardson, who died of colon cancer in 1991.
Initial funds will be donated by Richardson, but the popster said he plans to organize fund raisers and solicit public contributions to help foot the bill.
Any money Richardson wins on an upcoming celebrity edition of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire will go to his new foundation.
Just Within Reach's goals include: educating people about local environmental issues, including forestry, coal mining and hazardous wastes; holding companies and government agencies accountable for any pollution activities; and encouraging a sense of personal responsibility toward the environment.
The entertainer says he also plans on creating a TV program or a video using his songs to educate people about the environment. He plans on eventually focusing the foundation's attention on global green issues, as well.
Richardson said he will post information about the foundation on the Backstreet Boys' official Website, www.BackstreetBoys.com.
