A "Bachelorette" Bust-Up
So much for the Bachelorette's perfect match-making record.
Meredith Phillips and Ian McKee, who met and got engaged last winter on ABC's reality romance show, have called it quits after a year, a show rep confirmed to E! Tuesday.
"Our relationship began with great expectations for a happy ending, but unfortunately things didn't work out as we had hoped," the couple said in a statement to Extra. "What we experienced together was incredible and we are both sad to see it end. We thank you for your support."
Phillips, a reject from the Bob Guiney fourth season of The Bachelor, gave her final rose to Ian McKee in Februay 2004, going for the passionate, commitment-phobic Manhattan banker over stable Texas salesman Matthew Hinkl.
McKee surprised the former model by popping the question after the final rose ceremony--he had earlier told her (and his brother) he had no intention of proposing.
The couple's split is described as mutual. They are asking the media and fans to allow them to "move forward with their lives."
The Phillips-McKee split goes down as the first Bachelorette breakup.
With original Bachelorette couple Trista Rehn and Ryan Sutter still living in wedded bliss (they tied the knot in December 2003 in a million-dollar made-for-TV wedding extravaganza), the show's success rate has dropped to 50 percent. That's still not bad, considering that not one of The Bachelor hookups has managed to last.
Now it's up to Jen Schefft to tip the scales. Andrew Firestone's ex is the titular star on the latest season of The Bachelorette. Not that many are paying attention: The ongoing third edition of the wooing show is struggling, averaging just 8.6 million viewers an episode, down from 12.7 million who watched Phillips courtship.
