"Bachelor" Curse Strikes Again!

The Bachelor Curse has claimed its newest victims: Freshly minted tandem Jesse Palmer and Jessica Bowlin have uncoupled.

A national state of mourning commenced Thursday as the made-for-TV twosome announced that their love, so carefully nurtured over six whole weeks of taping, had soured and that they had mutually agreed to end their relationship.

A rep for Telepictures Productions, which oversees ABC's reality-dating series, confirmed the breakup. The couple themselves took to the airwaves to make the pronouncement, releasing a statement to Extra Thursday.

"Jessica and I shared an incredible romantic journey on the show that began with a friendship that remains strong today," said Palmer, a 25-year-old backup quarterback for the New York Giants. "We simply realized that, individually, our next steps take us in different directions."

"With too much distance and too little time, these were not ideal circumstances in which to start a relationship," Bowlin chimed in. "Jesse is a great guy and has a wonderful family. Who knows what the future holds?"

Okay, it's not like we didn't see this one coming. On The Bachelor's finale, Palmer decided against giving Bowlin an engagement ring along with his final rose, opting to give the 22-year-old California law student something far more romantic: a plane ticket.

Palmer said that his "gut instinct" told him that they belonged together, but he wasn't ready to commit. "I think that we need more time to grow and learn about each other," hence a one-way plane ticket to join him on the East Coast.

Apparently the growing and learning didn't take.

Palmer, of course, faced something far more daunting than having to pick a potential spouse from a field of 25 babes in the span of a month and a half with video cameras documenting every lame pickup line: The Bachelor Curse.

The curse dictates that none of the show's single-guy stars will find love in front of the cameras. Palmer's fate follows that of the other four Bachelors--Alex Michel, Aaron Buerge, Andrew Firestone and Bob Guiney--each of whom eventually broke up with the woman he chose on the show. (Guiney, however, just got engaged to soap star Rebecca Budig, so there is hope.)

The curse doesn't seem to apply to the show's female counterpart. Both Bachelorette vets are still together with the men they selected. Trista Rehn is married to Ryan Sutter and Meredith Phillips is engaged to Ian McKee.

Next season will see if the new Bachelorette, rumored to be Palmer dumpee Trish Schneider, makes it three-for-three.
