Bacall Berates Cruise
Add another name to the list of those unimpressed by Tom Cruise.
Now it's Lauren Bacall who's taking a shot at the couch-hopping, Katie Holmes-proposing superstar, telling Time magazine that his recent offscreen behavior is "vulgar" and then some.
"His whole behavior is so shocking," the 81-year-old Hollywood legend says in the Aug. 8 issue. "It's inappropriate and vulgar and absolutely unacceptable to use your private life to sell anything commercially, but I think it's kind of a sickness."
The cantankerous Key Largo star, who was famous for her marriage to Humphrey Bogart and their movie collaborations, didn't stop there. She also took aim at the War of the Worlds star's thespian skills: "When you talk about a great actor, you're not talking about Tom Cruise."
(For the record, not everyone agrees with Bacall's assessment of Cruise's acting ability. His Collateral costar Jamie Foxx extolled Cruise's virtues in a weekend BBC interview and offered a theory behind the hating. "Tom Cruise is like the Michael Jordan of acting," Foxx said. "He has never had a fall. So, people are looking for him to trip and fall.")
Bacall's no stranger to dissing the current crop of A-listers, especially in Cruise's sphere of influence. Last year, she ripped into a reporter who deigned to refer to the former missus, Nicole Kidman, as a "legend."
"She's not a legend," Bacall snapped. "She can't be a legend at whatever age she is...you have to be older."
Cruise has been under fire by everyone from Bacall to Brooke Shields since he began making the PR rounds to hype War of the Worlds--and in the process got engaged to Holmes, sang the praises of Scientology and danced around a certain talk-show host's furniture.
He has repeatedly slammed Shields' use of prescription drugs to treat postpartum depression, including during a tense sit-down with Matt Lauer on NBC's Today show in which Cruise also told Lauer the anchor knew nothing of "the history of psychiatry." The outbursts prompted Shields to write a op-ed in the New York Times calling Cruise's rant against her "ridiculous."
