Attorneys Turn Tables on Ronson
Samantha Ronson may know her way around a turntable, but it appears as if she hasn't even scratched the surface of her legal bills.
The Hollywood deejay and Lindsay Lohan pal who recently targeted celebrity blogger Perez Hilton in a defamation lawsuit is now being sued by her attorneys for nearly $165,000 in unpaid fees.
Ronson retained the counsel of New York law firm Davis & Gilbert LLC in June 2007 in order to file suit against Hilton and celebritybabylon.com over the gossipers' respected items connecting the hip-hop singer to the cocaine found in Lohan's car when she was arrested for DUI in May, according to the complaint filed in New York State Supreme Court and obtained by The Smoking Gun.
It was only after firm partner Martin Garbus was able to secure a retraction from Celebrity Babylon (which then settled out of court) that Ronson claimed she couldn't afford to pay her attorneys' fees, the breach-of-contract lawsuit alleges.
"Despite demands, Ronson has refused to pay D&G and Bingham [the L.A. firm Davis retained to assist]," the suit states.
Garbus also alleges that Ronson's behavior made the Hilton portion of the case even harder to litigate
"She failed to return calls, missed appointments, and otherwise acted in an unprofessional manner, making the presentation of the case, and the settlement with Celebrity Babylon, exceedingly difficult," Garbus claims.
A judge eventually dismissed the complaint against Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, agreeing with the scandalmonger that Ronson's claim was "frivolous" and an attack on his right to free speech.
After the dismissal, Ronson fired Davis & Gilbert and hired a contingency lawyer, according to the complaint.
But regardless of who's picking up the pieces, Garbus maintains that Ronson owes $164,930.72 for various services rendered. His firm is also looking to recoup the costs of the lawsuit and unspecified damages.
Hilton has hit up Ronson for $93,000 in attorney's fees, as well. A hearing on that matter is scheduled for Jan. 3.
