Why do stars go to all these fashion runway shows?

Why are stars obsessed with watching and being seen at runway shows?
Makani, Helsinki, Finland

The B!tch Replies:  Depends on the celebrity and exactly what kind of fashion show you're talking about. Right now we're in the stranglehold of yet another L.A. Fashion Week, which places "designers" like the Pussycat Dolls and Lauren Conrad at the vanguard of its creative army.

"Celebrity" guests this season range from Gene Simmons to David Lee Roth to—and this is as blazing as the wattage is looking to get—Dexter's Julie Benz.

When the stars are that low-grade, publicists tell me, the stars may be there to support the designer, but they're probably just hustling for a photo op. Celebs get snapped in the front row, often wearing clothes created by the host label. Magazines run the pics with a caption naming the designer, and everyone wins.

"They're really looking out for their own PR coverage," explains aLine Media's Heather Witbeck, whose fashion clients include Imasu by Kelly Nishimoto. "They're part of a hot, happening gig. It really ups their trendy quotient."

But what if a really fancy star shows up at one of these air-kissing conventions? What does that mean?

In those cases, "celebrities come mostly because they have either been paid by the designer to show up or by the PR firm representing the designer," says top publicist Jennifer Gross, whose fashion clientele includes menswear line KZO and jeweler Melissa McClure.

"When you see really great names show up, many times they are being flown to these shows, cars are being sent for them and donations are being made to a charity of their choice—and they're getting it under the table somehow. Sometimes they're pocketing it themselves, sometimes not," she tells this B!tch.

"We're talking anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000 to $100,000."
