Ashley Judd Gets Catty

Holy hairballs, Batman, there's a new feline in town.

Word around Gotham is that Ashley Judd will be slinking around as everyone's favorite sex kitten in an upcoming Catwoman feature being developed by Warner Bros.

While the studio hasn't officially confirmed the casting, Daily Variety reports that Judd met with studio executives and signed on for the role, which would be the first time the felonious feline has gone from supporting villain to star.

Catwoman reportedly will be a dark, stylistic noir à la the first two installments of the Batman franchise, which were directed by gloom-meister Tim Burton.

Catwoman was played with devilish charm by Michelle Pfeiffer in the second installment, Batman Returns, where she donned a tight-fitting dominatrix-like leather outfit and alternately turned on and tortured our hero with her trusty whip.

Fans can bet Judd will probably wear the same get-up, though no word yet whether Bruce Wayne or his monosyllabic alter ego will be appearing in the Catwoman feature. If Batman does appear, it will likely be only in a minor role.

Warner Bros. is hoping Catwoman can become a purr-fect, pedigreed franchise and spawn a kitty litter full of sequels.

Although the studio has two Matrix sequels on the horizon, it has seen the Batman series take a catnap at the box office since the disastrous performance of the campy Joel Schumacher-helmed Batman and Robin.

To breathe life back into the Caped Crusader, Warners has enlisted indie auteur Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream) to direct a prequel, Batman: Year One, and is also developing a futuristic live-action version of the WB 'toon, Batman Beyond.

Adding the bankable Judd to a potential Catwoman series could also help revive the comic book franchise.

Judd, who broke out in the box-office smash Double Jeopardy, is currently in theaters in the romantic comedy Someone Like You, which just debuted in second place this weekend with an estimated $10.3 million. She next costars with Sandra Bullock and Ellen Burstyn in The Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, directed by Thelma and Louise scribe Callie Khouri.
