In case you're not following every little trend of 2012, starlets are all about white crochet clothes right now.

The trick: Making people think the garment is naughty and see-through when it's actually not.

Observe Jessica Simpson's little sis, Ashlee Simpson, at the "An Evening With Women" event in Beverly Hills—she wore a 60s-inspired white shift dress that played off of her Twiggy-style blond bob, open-toed wedges and oversized clutch bag...

Sadly, the transparent frock really isn't because it has a flesh-colored lining. Bummer!

(The rest of the get-up was apparently being held for ransom by Rihanna, who wore a long, white, crochet skirt and little else to a dinner last week in Santa Monica.)

Ashlee's spiked gold earrings and matching purse embellishments kept the 27-year-old's look from lurching too far into retro-mod territory, and we love, love, love the smoky eye makeup that makes the actresses eyes pop.

Only one question remains: Is Ashlee gonna return Ri-Ri's top or not?
