Arnold's White House Aspirations

The Terminator for President? It could happen if Arnold Schwarzenegger gets his way.

The Total Recall star wants to say "hasta la vista" to a constitutional law that prevents him from running for president of the United States.

Currently, the Terminator turned California governor is ineligible to run for the country's highest office because he was born in Austria.

But Schwarzenegger says he would support an amendment to change the rules and allow foreign-born citizens to make a bid for the White House.

"Yes, absolutely [I would like to be eligible to run for president]," Schwarzenegger told 60 Minutes' Morley Safer in an interview scheduled to air Sunday.

"Why not? With my way of thinking, you always shoot for the top."

Not that Schwarzenegger is setting his sights on the White House just yet. He told Safer that he's much too busy running things in the Golden State at present to even consider making like Ronald Reagan and running for president--should a run become a possibility.

"There are so many things I have to do in California and my promise was to straighten out the mess in California," Schwarzenegger said.

The former bodybuilder thinks he's done a pretty darn good, if not perfect job during the year he's spent in office so far.

"Ten being the highest, I would give myself an eight," Schwarzenegger told Safer. "I think I fell short on some of the things. Probably the communication with the legislators."

It wasn't the governor's first appearance on 60 Minutes. Safer produced a clip of a 1977 segment that featured a glistening muscle-bound Schwarzenegger flexing for the camera back in his Mr. Universe days.

"You have to get me a tape of that," Schwarzenegger said.

Meanwhile, Schwarzenegger was reportedly puzzled to learn Thursday that Mel Gibson was miffed at him over an apparent diss from the governor's end.

Gibson appeared on ABC's Good Morning America and said that he had called Schwarzenegger to discuss the governor's support for a California ballot initiative to sell $3 billion in bonds to finance stem cell research.

Gibson, who is against the measure, said that Schwarzenegger essentially hung up on him, saying he had to give a speech in San Diego, and then never called back.

"Why do I, as a taxpayer, have to fund something I believe is unethical?" Gibson asked.

"Well, Arnold, I'm still waiting for your call."

Schwarzenegger said he was confused by the Braveheart star's words.

"I don't know what this was all about," the governor said in Los Angeles.

"I did talk to him for several minutes and explained to him what my position was," Schwarzenegger said.

"After that, I called back at 9 o'clock and left a message on his phone. He hasn't returned my call."

Memo to Mel: Check your voicemail.
