Aretha Can't Stand Heat, Cancels Show

For the Queen of Soul, a scorching day can be a royal pain.

Aretha Franklin called off a gig in her hometown of Detroit Sunday night, citing heat exhaustion from a string of performances along the sun-drenched East Coast.

The 65-year-old said the high-temp concerts were "sweltering and all but overwhelming" and preemptively canceled her Detroit show.

"Following the Weather Channel and the daily reports in the news via television and newspaper publications, I see that the temperatures in Detroit have been very similar," she said in a statement late Friday. "I am exhausted from the heat and cannot tolerate heat in these extremely high numbers and being in concert simultaneously."

The temperature in Detroit over the weekend exceeded 90 degrees—all but guaranteeing that Franklin wasn't the only AARPer to seek the shade.

Franklin, who has called the Motor City home for the past two decades, was due to perform at the outdoor DTE Energy Music Theater. While the "Respect" singer said she intends on making up the show, the gig has yet to be rescheduled.

Fans have been notified that they can obtain refunds for the show from the outlet at which they originally purchased their tickets.
