AOL Makes Like Elmo

Lieutenant Fancy, Elmo and Bono--if nothing else the Daytime Emmys brings people, puppets and formats together.

The so-called "creative craft" portion of the 33rd Daytime Emmys were handed out Saturday in New York and Hollywood. By night's end, awards had been presented to: a Sesame Street life force, Elmo puppeteer Kevin Clash; a former NYPD Blue bossy boss, actor James McDaniel; and a Webcast of a mega-benefit concert, Live 8 on AOL.

The Emmy for Clash, named Outstanding Performer in a Children's Series, was his sixth overall. The Emmy for McDaniel, tapped for his turn in the Showtime family special Edge of America, was his first ever as either a daytime or prime-time actor.

And the Emmy for Live 8 on AOL, awarded to AOL, was the first ever presented in the new category known as Outstanding Achievement in Video Content for Non-Traditional Delivery Platform. Translation: AOL won the first-ever "iPod Emmy," honoring programs that ensure one's cell phone, BlackBerry, computer and "small screen device" is never anything less than entertaining. Shows produced for bigger screens, but available on smaller screens, such as Desperate Housewives, were not eligible; shows produced specifically for smaller screens, such as Live 8 on AOL, an exclusive Webcast of last summer's U2-led concert, were.

Elsewhere, Saturday's Daytime Emmys proved an exercise in the usual suspects winning the usual awards: A best hairstyling honor the The Tyra Banks Show; a best makeup honor for The View; the bajillionth best game show win for Jeopardy!

The Food Network's 30 Minute Meals with Rachael Ray broke through with its first win in the Outstanding Service Show category, defeating the likes of Martha and This Old House.

The reconstituted Zoom took its first Emmy, or in Zoom speak: "Em. Me. Emmy," as Outstanding Children's Series.

Overall, PBS' Sesame Street won the most creative craft awards, seven, including one for Outstanding Writing in a Children's Series.

Among daytime talk shows, The Ellen DeGeneres Show won the most awards, four. Its host was honored along with her writing staff with an Emmy for Outstanding Special Class Writing.

Ryan Seacrest, who has yet to Emmy for American Idol, Emmy'd along with Regis Philbin and Kelly Ripa for cohosting the 2005 Walt Disney Christmas Day Parade, named Outstanding Special Class Special.

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Caroll Spinney, better known as his Sesame Street self, Big Bird. (He's also the man who puts the stick up Oscar the Grouch's, um, back.)

Emmys in the presumed glamour categories, honoring soap stars and talk-show hosts, will be handed out Friday in a three-hour ABC telecast. Dancing with the Stars' Tom Bergeron and Kelly Monaco will host.
