Another Wrist Slap, Arrest for Doherty
Is it us, or does Pete Doherty seem to get more fliers than Heathrow?
The British justice system continued to accommodate its most frequent customer Thursday, once again sparing the rocker jail time on drug-possession charges. And to celebrate, Doherty promptly went out and got arrested again.
Hours after getting another wrist-slap in court, Doherty was busted in east London by plainclothes officers and arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs with intent to supply, according to a BBC report. A 21-year-old man was also arrested. No further details were immediately available.
If Thursday's court hearing is any indication, Doherty won't have to worry about serious consequences.
The Babyshambles frontman was placed on two-year probation, banned from driving for six months and ordered to attend 18 months of rehab stemming from his guilty plea on seven counts of drug possession last month. The 27-year-old will also continue to undergo monthly drug testing, which will now revolve around his band's concert schedule.
Judge Jane McIvor praised the baby-faced rocker during his hearing at Thames Magistrates Court, saying he had shown improvement since his last progress report.
"It's going to be a long and slow process but you are showing significant signs of compliance and effort," she said, noting it had been an impressive three whole months since the rocker's last arrest.
Doherty's lawyer Sean Curran, who clearly has his work cut out for him, agreed with McIvor.
"I have noticed a significant improvement in his demeanor," Curran told the court. "He is fully appreciative of his surroundings and he is able to ask questions.
"He is clearly in a better physical and mental position than when he started."
Or when he was last in court.
On Mar. 23, Doherty showed in court, albeit 30 minutes late, to cop to possessing a laundry list of illicit substances. The rocker pleaded guilty to seven counts of carrying heroin, crack cocaine, cannabis and cannabis resin at the times of his arrests on Dec. 18 and Jan 14.
But the real headlines were made after Doherty 'fessed up.
After his hearing, the rocker got playful--or violent, depending on which media account you happen to read--with reporters, climbing a wall outside the court and kicking a microphone out of a reporter's hand while inadvertently connecting with her elbow.
Despite his out of court antics, Kate Moss' infamous ex was again praised in court by McIvor for his "positive progress" in sobering up--this despite having two dirty drug tests in February.
Last week, the "What Katie Did" singer was due in court for another progress report on separate drug charges, which he copped to in February and for which he's serving 12 months of community service as well as undergoing monthly drug testing.
Unfortunately, the rocker failed to show up for his review, claiming he was unable to get out of Paris in time. He was in the City of Lights for a Babyshambles concert.
McIvor rescheduled that review for May 12, but as always, it isn't Doherty's only court date on the horizon. He's also due back May 31 for a follow-up on today's sentencing and faces an additional court date for Thursday's arrest.
