Anna Nicole's Ex Locked Up

An ex-flame of Anna Nicole Smith got a healthy dose of reality Friday.

Mark Hatten, convicted in November of making criminal threats against the E! star and beating up her neighbor, was sentenced to nearly seven years behind bars for his misdeeds.

Hatten, whose apparently big mouth helped land him in court, tried to sweet-talk his way out of prison time.

"I'm not a bad person," Hatten relayed to Van Nuys, California, Superior Court Judge Kathryne Ann Stoltz, per Lost Angeles' City News Service. "I'm an excellent candidate for probation...If I have to go to prison, it's your call. [But] you'll never hear about me bothering Anna Nicole again or [her neighbor]."

The judge wasn't buying, though, and she sent the 36-year-old Hatten packing, citing his "ongoing pattern of violence."

"I think he is a threat to Anna Nicole Smith and a danger to the community," said Stoltz, who stopped short of giving Hatten the maximum penalty of nearly nine years in prison.

Smith skipped out on Friday's sentencing because, according to Deputy Los Angeles District Attorney David Stuart, "She wants nothing more to do with Mr. Hatten. She wants nothing more to do with this case."

Hatten's lawyer, Peter Knecht, plans to appeal the sentence.

In November, jurors found Hatten guilty of of repeatedly phoning the 35-year-old Smith and threatening to come to her house with a gun after their on-off affair went south for good.

Hatten was also found guilty of two other felony counts, assault with a deadly weapon and battery, stemming from an attack on one of Smith's neighbors, Rene Navarro, who tried to intervene in one of the couple's confrontations. Navarro needed surgery to repair ligaments in his hand after getting punched and stomped by Hatten.

Jurors, however, acquitted Hatten on two other counts alleging he stalked Smith and made criminal threats against her neighbor.

During the trial, Smith testified that she had a brief sexual fling with Hatten before their relationship ended in June 2000.

When she's not fending off would-be suitors, Smith's moves have been documented on E!'s The Anna Nicole Show. The show wrapped its second season in June, and its first season was recently released on DVD. (E! is the parent company of E! Online.)

Most recently she's been appearing in a series of TV ads for the diet pill Trimspa.
