Anna Nicole's Ex Convicted
How's this for a dose of reality?
A jury has found an ex-boyfriend of Anna Nicole Smith guilty of making terrorist threats against the buxom blonde and E! star.
After two days of deliberations a jury in Van Nuys, California, convicted Mark Hatten, 35, of repeatedly phoning the 35-year-old Smith and threatening to come to her house with a gun after their on-off affair went south for good, according to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office.
Hatten was also found guilty of two other felony counts, assault with a deadly weapon and battery, stemming from an attack on one of Smith's neighbors, Rene Navarro, who tried to intervene in one of their confrontations earlier this year.
Jurors, however, acquitted Hatten on two other counts alleging he stalked Smith and made criminal threats against her neighbor.
During the trial, Smith testified that she had a brief sexual fling with Hatten before their relationship ended in June 2000, when he turned up at her home with a knife. After she gave him the boot, Hatten began telephoning the Texas-born former Playboy Playmate and multimillion-dollar heiress relentlessly and harassing her.
On one occasion, Hatten phoned Smith and told her that he was on his way over to her place with a gun--which was when he got into the altercation with Navarro. According to Smith, Navarro told Hatten to keep away from her, and Hatten obliged by punching and kicking Navarro, who needed surgery to repair ligaments in his hand.
Hatten's attorney said his client had merely stopped by with a friend to deliver some flowers to Smith. But the jury didn't buy it.
Now, Hatten faces up to eight years and eight months in the slammer for his actions. He's due to sentenced on December 11.
When she's not fending off would-be suitors, Smith's moves have been documented on E! (the parent of E! Online)'s The Anna Nicole Show. The show wrapped its second season in June, and its first season was just released on DVD.
