Speculation mounts that Matt Lauer's current coanchor may be making an imminent exit from the venerable morning-show franchise

Is a new day dawning on the Today show?

Speculation has been running rampant that Matt Lauer's current coanchor Ann Curry may be saying goodbye to her early-morning call times and exiting her high-profile gig just a year after taking over the job from Meredith Vieira.

Rumors began popping up in earnest yesterday afternoon, when The New York Times reported that network executives were looking to remove the 55-year-old newswoman—and 14-year veteran of the venerable morning franchise—from her chair.

The report also comes in the wake of Today drawing ratings slightly less robust than usual, and not long after rival morning show Good Morning America made headlines with a well-milked victory after it outdrew the NBC show for the first time in years.

According to the Times, Curry—who has no agent—enlisted a lawyer to help in negotiations, with the paper claiming that execs want any transitions to be complete before the show, as per usual, sends its anchors to cover the summer Olympics.

Neither the network nor Curry have spoken out about the reports, and ever the consummate pro, the anchor was on air this morning.

"Good morning twitterverse," she tweeted before the start of the program.

One way or another, the show must go on.
