Angelina's Bogus Adoption Agent

A Hawaiian woman who negotiated the adoption of Angelina Jolie's Cambodian-born son pleaded guilty to federal charges of visa fraud and money laundering Wednesday.

Lauryn Galindo, 53, allegedly ran a baby-trafficking ring that paid poor parents as little as $100 for their children while Galindo and her sister, Lynn Devin, received up to $10,000 from Americans eager to adopt.

Galindo would then pass the children off as orphans when she knew they had "at least one living parent," according to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Lord.

Devin already pleaded guilty to falsifying documents in December.

The charges cover 18 specific adoptions arranged by the sisters' agency, Seattle International Adoptions, between 1997 and 2001, though they reportedly paired hundreds of southeast Asian children with U.S. families over the last decade.

Jolie officially adopted her son, Maddox, in 2002 after meeting him in an orphanage in November 2001. The Oscar-winning actress and United Nations goodwill ambassador was forced to wait two months before bringing the baby back home while the Immigration and Naturalization Service reviewed his case to make sure he was legally obtained.

Cambodia's booming illegal baby trade--impoverished parents are paid to give up their children to orphanages where they can be adopted by wealthy Westerners--led the American government to ban adoptions between the countries two years ago.

However, the status of the children adopted through the agency will not change. Nor has it changed Jolie's outlook on adoption. She's purportedly in the process of adding another child to her growing family, possibly from Chechnya, according to Us Weekly. Jolie told Extra last year that she planned to adopt "a small football team" of kids.

Just call her the hardest working mom in show-biz, Jolie's currently shooting the romantic thriller Mr. And Mrs. Smith with Brad Pitt. She's also got a full schedule this fall with the upcoming releases of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, due Sept. 17, Shark Tale, Oct. 1, and Alexander, coming out Nov. 5.

Meanwhile, Galindo could face up to 20 years in jail at her Sept. 24 sentencing.

Already, the sisters have agreed to surrender all property associated with the crimes, including a home in Hawaii and a Jaguar automobile, but that's not likely to be enough for authorities who claim the women fudged facts to obtain visas for the kids and shuffled funds to avoid reporting over $150,000 in adoption fees.
