Anchorwoman Away at Fox
Maybe if it were more Naked News than Broadcast News viewers might have cared.
But Anchorwoman decidedly wasn't, and Fox has pulled the plug on the unqualified-hot-babe-gets-hired-to-boost-local-news-ratings reality show after only one dismal episode.
The program chronicled former beauty queen Lauren Jones, who was tapped to reverse the fortunes of a small Texas TV station. Jones' résumé included stints as a World Wrestling Entertainment diva and as one of Bob Barker's Beauties on last season's The Price Is Right, but nothing to suggest she had the, er, assets to be a credible news reader.
While such quibbles might not bother Rupert Murdoch and the honchos who also dispense the fair-and-balanced Fox News, Anchorwoman failed to click with TV watchers, attracting a miniscule 2.7 million viewers for Wednesday's one-hour premiere (and, ultimately, finale).
Anchorwoman finished last among the Big Four nets in the 8 p.m. slot, behind CBS' Drew Carey-hosted Power of !0 (8.7 million viewers), the NBC clip show Most Outrageous Moments (6.4 million) and a double shot of According to Jim reruns on ABC (4.7 million).
Despite a massive publicity push from Fox, which tried to position the show as a "comedy/reality hybrid," about the only ones who seemed to care about the debut were real journalists, who groused about how Anchorwoman made a mockery of their profession. It also didn't help that critics almost universally panned the show.
Anchorwoman's action took place at KYTX-TV Channel 19 in the town of Tyler, deep in the heart of south Texas. The station manager shamelessly hires Jones to goose ratings by titillating viewers (who can only hope for a news flash). Jones is game and tries her hardest to get acclimated in the newsroom, but the results aren't pretty.
The remaining six episodes that were filmed will now be shunted off to the Web, on fox.com and myspace.com. Reruns of the Brad Garrett sitcom Til' Death will plug the hole on the broadcast schedule.
As for Jones, she might not be ready for prime time, but there's always Hannity & Colmes.
