Anastacia Battling Breast Cancer

For would-be pop diva Anastacia, a recent medical diagnosis must indeed seem like a freak of nature.

The 29-year-old singer, who has garnered international acclaim for her music and has earned props Stateside for her soulful album Freak of Nature, has been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Doctors discovered the cancer last week during a routine physical, but the prognosis is good for the sultry singer.

"My doctor was insistent that I have a mammogram even though it was not required. He saved my life," Anastacia said Tuesday in a statement. "I appreciate all who are concerned, but please don't worry. Either way, I have no intention of letting this news get me down. I'm a fighter by nature, and nothing will ever change that."

Fans are already flocking to the Web with their support of the singer.

"You are such a great person with a beautiful voice--I know you are not the kind of girl who will give up," said one fan on a Sony Music Message Board. "You bring so much love to your fans," said another fan. "This thing won't beat you."

Anastacia has been an international pop phenom for several years, but she is just starting to receive recognition in the U.S. She was featured in several men's, women's and music magazines throughout the summer and fall, and critics have pegged her as the next It singer. She even appeared on the 2002 edition of VH1's Diva's Live in May with Celine Dion, Mary J. Blige, Cher and the Dixie Chicks. Currently, she can be seen in a series of Dr. Pepper commercials with Cindy Lauper.

"Anastacia's got a fierce, funky voice with an impressive range, rightly drawing comparisons to divas such as Tina Turner," said the Associated Press in June, after the release of her sophomore effort Freak of Nature, which debuted at 27 on the charts. (Her first album, Not That Kind, sold millions of copies overseas.)

"Anastacia's tangy, sassy delivery--which owes a nod to old-school influences such as Chaka Khan and Tina Turner--leaves no doubt that she's a very funky girl," USA Today raved.

In spite of the heath scare, Anastacia plans to keep up her busy recording schedule. Her publicist, Paul Freundlich, declined to discuss her plan of attack for the cancer (surgery and subsequent radiation treatment are typically employed) but said she is currently in dance rehearsals in New York and will soon wrap the video for her latest single, "Love Is a Crime," which is featured on the soundtrack to the Golden Globe-winning flick Chicago.

Born Anastacia Newkirk, the Windy City native has battled other health problems. At 13, she was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract that required invasive surgery and resulted in a nasty scar across her abdomen. Today, she proudly sports belly-baring tops as a testament to her survival.
