Alleged Gere Stalker Restrained
A New York judge has barred a German woman from coming into contact with the actor after she allegedly phoned him as many as 1,000 times over the past the year and visited his office a half-dozen times.
The phone-happy 51-year-old Ursula Reichert-Habbishaw was arrested last week after showing up unannounced (not to mention uninvited) to Gere's Gotham office demanding to see the actor. It was, according to the Manhattan District Attorney's Office, at least the sixth time in the past year she had done so.
Prosecutors say Reichert-Habbishaw apparently traveled from her home in Kassell, Germany, expressly to see the 52-year-old Tibet-loving star of such films as An Officer and a Gentleman, Pretty Woman and this weekend's Unfaithful. (Her court-appointed lawyer says the woman, a divorced mother of four children ages 16 to 22, came to New York to find a job.)
After undergoing a battery of psychiatric tests, Reichert-Habbishaw was on Thursday deemed fit to stand trial by Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Gregory Carro. Prosecutors had her arraigned on charges of harassment, aggravated harassment and stalking. The charges carry a maximum one-year jail term.
The judge also granted Gere a restraining order against Reichert-Habbishaw forcing to her to stay away from the actor, his family, home and business. And he set the woman's bail at $5,000.
In addition to her impromptu visits, prosecutors say, she deluged Gere with phone calls, leaving hundreds upon hundreds of creepy messages on his voice mail, including, according to the Associated Press: "I want to be with you and share your life," "Death seems to be the best," "I can take a pistol and kill myself," "I will stay with you for all time," and "I will follow you."
She kept dialing despite the efforts of Gere's personal assistant, Karen Klose, to block the calls.
According to court documents, Reichert-Habbishaw also delivered a book and card to Gere's office in April 2001, and, this past February, she sent Gere a fax with the message, "If you want to have me there today, there is only this way. Love, Ursula."
Reichert-Habbishaw has been ordered to return to court May 16.
