All Katrina, All the Time
Call it stark reality TV.
Prime-time newsmagazines covering the hellish aftermath of Hurricane Katrina dominated the ratings for the TV week ended Sunday, per Nielsen Media Research.
Nearly half of the top 10 was comprised of storm-related coverage. A Dateline NBC aired last Wednesday, as New Orleans flooded and tens of thousands remained stranded in squalor, was the week's most watched show, per Nielsen, drawing in 12.2 million.
On cable, where the Katrina story unfolded 24/7, Fox News led the way, with its news shows filling the top 15. A Friday telecast of The O'Reilly Factor (5.15 million) was the third-most watched cable show, behind only TNT's The Closer (5.8 million) and Spike's WWE Raw Zone (5.17 million).
Even more eyeballs caught the nightly news shows on ABC, CBS and NBC. Their telecasts combined to average 9.3 million for the week. The NBC Nightly News (10.6 million) was tops among the three.
According to NBC, an estimated 13.8 million caught some or all of the all-star fundraiser, A Concert for Hurricane Relief, last Friday on the network and two of its sister outlets, MSNBC and CNBC. (Because the show aired commercial-free, it was not ranked by Nielsen.)
This coming Friday, all six broadcast networks--ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, UPN and the WB--simultaneously will present yet another benefit telecast, Shelter from the Storm: A Concert for the Gulf Coast. (The event will also air on cable outlets, including E!)
Elsewhere:
Fox's Prison Break was the week's most watched show among the all-important 18-to-49-year-olds. Overall, it locked up sixth place, with 10.5 million viewers. Fox's So You Think You Can Dance stumbled again, down to 21st place (7.9 million). In a week of bad news, viewers didn't seem much in the mood for the antics of a party-hearty fortysomething coed, with ratings down some 10 percent for NBC's Tommy Lee Goes to College (55th place, 4.8 million). In its second outing, HBO's Rome crumbled, off 20 percent from its premiere and down to 3 million viewers. Thanks to its Rome lead in, or lack thereof, the season finale of HBO's Entourage was witnessed by a relatively exclusive 2.1 million.Overall, CBS scored victories in total viewers, averaging 7.6 million, and the 18-49 demo. NBC trailed in viewers with 6.1 million, followed by Fox (5.7 million) and ABC (5.7 million). UPN (2.4 million) held its lead over the WB (1.9 million).
