Aligning the "Stars" Numbers

Dialer error, not network error, is responsible for Dancing with the Stars' star-crossed phone voting, ABC said Wednesday.

"We did investigate thoroughly," said network spokeswoman Lauren Tobin. "Fortunately or unfortunately, it was not our mistake."

Since the hit summer show debuted June 1, an answering service in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, has received hundreds of calls from viewers trying to cast phone ballots for actor John O'Hurley and his partner, professional dancer Charlotte Jorgensen. Owner Kathy Klein estimated the mix-ups have cost her about $500.

Some at Klein's Mount Pleasant Answering Service suspected that ABC was broadcasting an incorrect phone number for O'Hurley and Jorgensen. A toll-free line "888" owned by the answering service and the toll-free "866" Dancing with the Stars line assigned to O'Hurley-Jorgensen are identical, save for the prefixes.

But Tobin said the network has reviewed its broadcasts, and found there to be no mix-up, at least on its end.

"It's just a case of people misreading the number," Tobin said.

All of this might have been cold comfort to Klein, who complained Tuesday morning that ABC had done nothing to help her and her swamped business. But that's about to change.

"We are having conversations to help her," Tobin said.

Per Klein, ABC has asked her to gather up phone bills and records. Said Klein on Wednesday: "I'm much happier."

Heretofore a non-Dancing with the Stars viewer, Klein said she might check out the show, which is now down to three couples: O'Hurley and Jorgensen; General Hospital's Kelly Monaco and dancer Alec Mazo; and singer-actor Joey McIntyre and dancer Ashly Delgrosso.

If Klein tunes in Wednesday night's paso doble and foxtrot competition, she might see ABC has tweaked the way it displays the dance teams' phone numbers. To help minimize further dialer errors, Tobin said, the network is looking at making the size and font of the posted numbers more uniform.

Klein isn't so much of a Dancing with Stars convert yet that she expects to vote, but if she does, she doesn't expect she'll dial the wrong number.

Said Klein: "No, not at all."
