Aliens Returning Duchovny!

Looks like Fox is shelling out a hefty ransom to free David Duchovny from permanent alien abduction.

As E! Online reported Tuesday, Duchovny's paranoid FBI alter ego Fox Mulder will indeed return for an eighth season of Fox's sci-fi staple The X-Files, after the actor agreed to settle his longstanding financial squabble with the studio.

Duchovny will appear in about half of next season's 22 episodes, reuniting to fight conspiracy with FBI cohort Dana Scully (the also-returning Gillian Anderson). For his efforts he will reportedly fetch between $350,000 and $400,000 per show.

The last-minute deal also wraps up Duchovny's own conspiracy claims: That 20th Century Fox cheated him out of millions in X-Files syndication profits. The studio reached a settlement with the 39-year-old actor, in a total package said to be worth at least $20 million, sources say.

Neither side is commenting on the settlement, but Duchovny says he's (surprise!) happy to be back on the case.

"I am pleased we were able to come to an agreement that enables me to remain part of The X-Files," Duchovny says in a statement. "Now that all the business issues have been settled, I'm looking forward to going back to work."

He's not the only happy one. X-Files' devoted followers praised his return--especially considering the utter disappointment that would have awaited them Sunday night, when the cliffhanger season finale ends with Fox Mulder getting abducted by aliens. (Sorry for the spoiler, by the way).

"This is absolutely the best scenario possible," one X-Phile writes on the alt.tv.x-files newsgroup. "I wanted X-Files to end this season, but it really would be ending with a whimper if [Duchovny] were to leave."

Creator and executive producer Chris Carter--who also inked a last-minute deal to return to the show--was unhappily preparing to move ahead without Duchovny. But Carter said Wednesday he was pleased Fox Mulder's return will give the sci-fi hero a few more plot twists, and a proper send-off.

"I was very pleased and I think the season finale cliffhanger creates great possibilities to take show in new directions," Carter said.

It's still not known which episodes Duchovny will appear in next season. But his future with the show seemed especially doubtful last August, when Duchovny sued Fox for $25 million, claiming the company cheated him out syndication profits by giving the rights to its own cable network, FX.

Carter, however, believes Duchovny's legal scuffle with Fox won't bring any tension to the set when filming resumes in Los Angeles.

As for the celluloid future of X-Files, Duchovny's deal doesn't shed much more light on whether the series will return its franchise to the big screen. But the actor told E! Online last month he wouldn't rule out the possibility.

"If I got a script as FBI agent Fox [Mulder] again, if it was great, I would do it," he said.

Until then, the truth will just have to wait.
