Ah-nuld: "T3" Getting New Blood
With shooting set to begin April 15, Ah-nuld told the Sci Fi Channel's Web-based Sci-Fi Wire that former costar Edward Furlong will not be appearing in Terminator 3: The Rise of the Machines--and Linda Hamilton's Sarah Connor character will have already died.
The 54-year-old action icon says this latest installment, directed by Jonathan Mostow (U-571) in place of James Cameron and due in theaters summer 2003, will begin with Furlong's John Connor character in his twenties. The role, however, will not be played by Furlong and has not yet been cast.
Then there's Hamilton's Sarah Connor, who "is in the movie as flashbacks and stuff like that, but I think they felt like they didn't want to have the exact same cast and have them be limited with the story, but really take certain people out, and just let's assume that she has died already," Schwarzenegger said during press rounds for his new film Collateral Damage.
John is "on his own, rather than having...the mother there, whining away, saying, 'Get it straight. You have to be the savior. You can't do this, and you can't date this girl.' Jonathan was very adamant [that] he wanted the kid now to be 22 or 23, the mother's died, and let's move on. Let's have him be on his own. Let's have him have a girlfriend. And let's go to the next level. So that was the idea."
It's not like Furlong would've needed to stretch for the part--he's now 24 years old. The actor initially expressed interest in reprising the role, but he has been in and out of rehab for substance abuse, and he may have posed too much of a risk to the big-budget production.
Reps for the actor didn't immediately return a call for comment. His recent credits include Detroit Rock City and Pecker, and he reprised his John Connor role alongside Hamilton and Schwarzenegger for Universal Studios' theme park attraction Terminator 2: 3-D in 1999.
Despite the casting changeups and the new director, Schwarzenegger (who's snagging a nice $30 million paycheck to reprise his starmaking cyborg role) says he was confident in Mostow's ability to bring the sci-fi megafranchise back to life, after Cameron turned down the gig.
"[Cameron] just finished shooting an IMAX movie, and he will be finished editing it this summer," he said. "Then he will be thinking about the next thing, whatever that is.
"And when we saw the submarine movie Jonathan did, U-571, we all felt that he had the kind of talent and patience and know-how to work with special effects, visual effects and all of that. Then when we met him [and] it became more and more clear that he has the right personality and calmness to do the film."
