AFI's Next List: Top 50 Movie Stars

If there's one thing the American Film Institute just loves, it's a good list.

So, after publishing what its voters determined to be the Top 100 films of all time last June, the AFI is embarking on a plan to narrow a list of 500 nominees into a list of history's 50 greatest movie legends (25 men, 25 women).

As with last year's movie list, a panel of critics, actors, directors, Industry types and high-profile fans (President Clinton was included for the films) will determine who gets on.

And as for who's eligible, don't look for the Cruises or Hanks, or any other of the modern-day Toms, Leonardos or Harrisons, for that matter. To be a nominee, you must be someone with a significant American screen presence who debuted in or before 1950.

The actor can be someone who debuted after that, but he or she must have died after already completing what's determined to be a significant body of work. (This explains why James Dean, John Belushi and Elvis Presley are being considered.)

The alphabetical list of 250 male nominees, which is bookended by the legendary comic tandem of Bud Abbot and Lou Costello and actor Robert Young, includes the no-brainer likes of the still-very-popular John Wayne, Humphrey Bogart, Jimmy Stewart, Rudolph Valentino, Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope and Charlton Heston.

Ronald Reagan, The Three Stooges and ubiquitous character actor Ward Bond are mild surprises.

The male-list inclusion of deceased John Waters transvestite franchise player Divine, meanwhile, is an eyebrow-raiser on several levels.

The list of 250 female nominees starts with George Burns' wife/comic partner Gracie Allen, winds through such notables as Lauren Bacall, Lucille Ball, Ingrid Bergman, Judy Garland, Lillian Gish, Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor, and ends with Loretta Young.

Just like the film list was, the 50 "legends" will be announced by a group of 50 contemporary stars during a June CBS special.
