Actors Honor McDormand, Rush

"My name is Jerry Seinfeld and I am a bad actor." So said the comedian as he ascended the stage to collect one of the top prizes at the Screen Actors Guild Awards Saturday night.

Seinfeld thanked his able-acting co-stars as the eponymous sitcom was honored for best ensemble, and Julie Louis-Dreyfus was named best actress, in the TV comedy category. NBC's other Thursday-night staple, ER, picked up the SAG Awards for best ensemble in a TV drama.

It was a routine awards night on the the television side, with John Lithgow picking up yet another trophy for his work on 3rd Rock from the Sun, Gillian Anderson winning best dramatic actress for The X-Files and Dennis Franz taking home a statue for NYPD Blue.

But those of us looking at the SAG Awards for a hint at who's going to win at the Academy Awards had a bit of a shock. The Birdcage, denied any of the top Oscar nominations, won the SAG Award for best movie ensemble, beating Academy favorites Shine and The English Patient, the latter of which came home empty handed despite being nominated for four awards.

Aside from the big win for The Birdcage and the snub of The English Patient, there was little surprise for the individual film acting honors. Shine's Geoffrey Rush and Fargo's Frances McDormand won "Actor" statuettes for their leading performances. Supporting honors went to Cuba Gooding Jr. for Jerry Maguire and the legendary Lauren Bacall for The Mirror Has Two Faces.

Angela Lansbury, longtime star of Murder, She Wrote, received the Life Achievement Award.

The difference between Oscar and "Actor" statuettes is that only working thespians vote on the SAG award. This is the third year SAG has handed out its Actor prizes. The nominations are selected by a committee of 4,200 randomly-picked SAG members and are voted on by the entire active membership of about 86,000.
