Achy, Breaky Chart: Hannah Montana No. 1
Miley Cyrus really is a daddy's girl.
Miley, who plays the titular character in the hugely popular Disney Channel series Hannah Montana opposite real-life papa Billy Ray Cyrus, has followed her father's footsteps to the top of the pop charts.
For the week ended Sunday, the Hannah Montana soundtrack moved 281,000 copies, becoming the first TV soundtrack to debut at number one since SoundScan began tracking album sales in 1991—and outperforming major releases by My Chemical Romance and John Legend.
In addition to eight cuts by Miley (who plays the dual role of a normal teenager and a superstar singer on the show), the soundtrack features the father-daughter duet "I Learned from You." Billy Ray, who plays Miley's onscreen father, is a chart trendsetter himself. The master of the mullet spent a whopping 17 weeks atop the Billboard 200 with 1992's Some Gave All. The disc sold upward of 9 million copies in the U.S. and benefited from the monster hit "Achy Breaky Heart," which helped sparked the country-line-dancing craze of the early '90s.
With Hannah Montana, the Mouse House scored its third monster TV soundtrack of the year. The High School Musical soundtrack, which topped the charts twice already, ranks as the bestselling release of '06, with 3.2 million in sales. It currently sits at number 45. Likewise, the Cheetah Girls 2 soundtrack debuted at number five in August and is perched at number 32 with nearly 600,000 copies sold.
My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade, the presumed favorite for number one going into the week, only marched as far as the two spot with 240,000 copies. The critically acclaimed concept album also took the runner-up spot in the U.K. and Mexico, though it did reach number one in New Zealand and Chile. Its radio single "Welcome to the Black Parade" went number one on the Alternative/Modern Rock Radio chart as well as on the U.K. singles chart.
R&B star Legend followed closely behind, selling 231,000 copies of Once Again at number three. With the release of his new album, the Grammy-winning singer's Get Lifted—his breakthrough album on Kanye West's G.O.O.D. Music—get lifted back onto the album charts at 141.
Rounding out the Top 10: Justin Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds at four, Evanescence's The Open Door at five, Hinder's Extreme Behavior at six, Diddy's Press Play at seven, Tony Bennett's Duets: An American Classic at eight, Nickelback's All the Right Reasons at nine and The Killers' Sam's Town in the 10 spot.
St. Louis rapper Jibbs just missed the Top 10 with Jibbs Feat. Jibbs opened at 11 with nearly 47,000 copies, trailing Sam's Town by a mere 119, thanks in large part to the smash hit "Chain Hang Low."
Alabama checked in at 15 bow with Songs of Inspiration selling 44,000 copies. Lil Boosie, who clearly had other inspirations, followed at 18, moving 41,000 copies of Bad Azz. Taylor Swift's self-titled album entered at 19, Montgomery Gentry's Some People Change opened at 23, Shareefa's Point of No Return landed at 25, and Hulkster heiress Brooke Hogan's Undiscovered found its place at 28.
Other newcomers included the deluxe reissue Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack at 31, Paul Stanley's Live to Win at 53, Kelly Price's This Is Who I Am at 54, George Benson and Al Jarreau's Givin' It Up at 58, Intocable's Crossroads: Cruce De Caminos at 59 and Gucci Mane's Hard to Kill at 76.Sparta wrapped up the week's big bows at 83 with Threes. The band's core members got their start in the El Paso group At The Drive-In, which split into Sparta and the Mars Volta in '01. The latter band's latest, Amputechture, opened at number nine in September.
Finally, inaugural American Idol champ Kelly Clarkson celebrated her 100th week on the charts with Breakaway, which currently sits at 184 on nearly 5.6 million copies sold in the U.S.
Overall, album sales were up 1.7 percent from the previous week and up 5.1 percent compared to the same week last year; however, year-to-date sales continue to lag about 5 percent behind 2005.
