ABC's McSteamy New Bachelor
There's a new Brad in town.
ABC has announced that bar owner Brad Womack will be the 11th unlucky-in-love singleton to attempt to find a partner on The Bachelor, when the latest edition of the long-running matchmaking show kicks off next month.
The network is touting Atlanta-born, Texas-raised Womack as a self-made entrepreneur, a drastic change from the pedigreed guys of years past.
The 34-year-old blue-eyed Womack knows from manual labor, having left Texas State University after just one year to work for roughly eight years in oil fields around the country, logging time in Texas, Louisiana, North Dakota and California.
Afterward, Womack set his sights on bartending and soon saved up enough money with twin brother Chad and other brother Wesley to open his own bar at the tender age of 28. The business-minded siblings have since opened four boîtes in total in the Austin area and are looking to venture into hotel development.
And apparently love-life development.
ABC has high hopes for Womack, calling him "sincere" and "optimistic" about finding a wife. The network has already labeled him "The Bachelor's own McSteamy," though presumably more for his Eric Dane-like beefiness than his nonexistent medical degree.
Time will tell if Womack's good lucks will translate to good ratings, as the once hot series has been in a steady Nielsen decline over the years. Part of the problem may lie in the lack of longevity in the couples—only one camera-made pairing, that of Bachelorette Trista Sutter and firefighter hubby Ryan—ever made it to the altar. And while this couple welcomed their first child earlier this year, the post-Bachelor road is riddled with breakups.
Though not necessarily for lack of intent.
Last season, U.S. Navy Lieutenant Andy Baldwin popped the question to his final rose bearer, social worker Tessa Horst, though it's two months in, and a wedding date has yet to be set.
Regardless, the new Bachelor will begin doling out his roses to 25 hopeful women when the Chris Harrison-hosted show holds its 90-minute season premiere Sept. 24.
