ABC Names Jennings' Replacements

ABC has decided no one person can fill the late Peter Jennings' anchor seat--so two TV news vets are going give it a shot.

Elizabeth Vargas and Bob Woodruff were tapped Monday to take over as coanchors of World News Tonight, starting next month.

"Elizabeth and Bob together will be the anchors for this new broadcast and digital age of World News Tonight," ABC News President David Westin said.

"Their experience as journalists, their familiarity to our audiences, and their commitment to gathering and delivering the news anywhere, anytime and in every way make them the right team to take us forward for the next generation."

The announcement means only a slight change to the show's current roster of news readers, which also included Charles Gibson as one of three alternating anchors. The trio was put in place last spring to fill in for an ailing Jennings. Jennings, who died Aug. 8 of lung cancer, had hosted solo for more than 20 years.

ABC decided to keep intact the Good Morning America team of Gibson and Diane Sawyer.

The pairing of Vargas, 44, and Woodruff, 47, marks the first coanchoring of a major network evening newscast since Dan Rather and Connie Chung briefly--and disastrously--tag-teamed at CBS in the mid-'90s.

Both anchors also have a long history with the Alphabet net: Woodruff previously anchored World News Tonight Weekend Edition, and Vargas is turning into ABC's go-to replacement gal.

Last spring, she was tapped to take over cohosting duties on 20/20 for the semi-retired Barbara Walters.

But the new anchors aren't the only change at ABC.

The second-ranked evening newscast--behind NBC's Nightly News with Brian Williams--also announced plans to be the first to broadcast live in all three time zones, with Vargas and Woodruff offering up three versions of the news per night. The multiple broadcasts allow the network to incorporate breaking reports into the later feeds.

The ABC evening newscast is also making a more concerted effort to woo young viewers--and make Vargas and Woodruff earn every cent of their presumably-hefty paychecks--by tapping the duo to coanchor a brief Webcast earlier in the day on ABCNews.com.

The new-look newscast kicks off Jan. 3.

With ABC filling the anchor seats, the ball is now in CBS' court.

On Friday, the Los Angeles Times reported that the Eyeball has been courting The Today Show's Katie Couric to take over as full-time evening anchor when her NBC contract expires in May.

Veteran newsman Bob Schieffer has been acting as the network's temporary fill-in since Dan Rather signed off in March.
