Tomorrow, Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez and Joshua Ledet will find out who's going to compete in the American Idol finale.
And tonight, they had one more shot to get there.
Wednesday's show was the annual triple threat, when the top three perform three songs apiece, chosen by the judges, themselves and, lastly, mentor Jimmy Iovine.
What sort of combinations did they come up with? And who gave the best performance of the night?
First up, the judges' picks. Randy Jackson unsurprisingly went old-school soul for Joshua, tasking the preacher's son with Etta James' "I'd Rather Go Blind"—which he promptly killed.
Jessica didn't hit every note on Mariah Carey's "My All," picked for her by the on-her-way-out Jennifer Lopez, but the 16-year-old gave it her all and she certainly didn't lose any fans. Phillip, however, may have managed to attract anyone who wasn't already on the bandwagon with the Four Seasons' (and redone by Madcon) "Beggin'," a rather inspired selection on Steven Tyler's part.
But the ball was back in Joshua's court when he picked John Lennon's "Imagine" for himself and gave one of the best-ever Idol performances, let alone just a great rendition of that song.
"Another thank-you-God moment with you," Steven said. Aside from that Tylerism, we actually felt the judges' praise—while affectionate and sincere—was a little reserved.
And then Jessica went and met him note for note with—attention, Steven Tyler's ego!—"I Don't Want to Miss a Thing."
"You just took a great song and made it greater," observed the Aerosmith frontman.
Phillip followed in the Top-40 vein, performing Matchbox Twenty's "Disease"—it sounded fine, but didn't thrill.
Moving onto round three, Mr. Judgmental himself, Jimmy Iovine, confidently gave Joshua Mary J. Blige's "No More Drama." And, what do you now, no one was disappointed!
Though Jimmy had the Jackson 5 in mind, Jessica still sort of ended up with a double dose of Mariah when she was tasked with "I'll Be There" (covered by the diva in 1992). Hence, it was another ballad that was sung confidently and satisfactorily, but also routinely.
Phillip closed the show rather brilliantly with Bob Seger's "We've Got Tonight" and there probably wasn't a girl who didn't want a night—any night!—with the 21-year-old frontrunner after that.
"The perfect song at the perfect time, and your best performance on the show ever!" Randy exclaimed. And we're not sure what Steven compared Phillip to, because it had to be bleeped!
The field will be narrowed to two tomorrow night and, don't forget, next week's two-night finale takes place Tuesday and Wednesday.
