Braids are back, baby, and I'm not just talking about those plaited pigtails Kimberly Stewart loves to wear. This season, a torrent of twisted options are weaving their way in and out of Hollywood's elite locks.
"Braids are a great way to update your look for a night, because they are an easy and quick fix that can completely change a look entirely," says celebrity hairstylist Sean J of Juan Juan Salon. Mary-Kate Olsen uses the Heidi classic to transform her wavy locks into a chic but whimsical look for a special night, while Sarah Jessica Parker hides her flirty curls with a very sleek, old-Hollywood plaited chignon. The greatest thing about this trend is it works on nearly every type of hair. Plus, it's an easy way to hide roots if you're unable to schedule a highlights touchup before a big night. Sean's colorist wife, Jennifer J, who has worked her magic on the likes of Julia Roberts and Hilary Swank, suggests wearing your hair wavy, then adding a few half-inch braids around the frame of your face. "This will hide bad roots,” she says, “and give your hair an edgy look."
Just remember to stay true to your age. It's fine for young stars like Hayden Panettiere to twist up a headband, but if you can remember partying at Studio 54, stick to braided buns.
