Star Q&A: Erika Christensen

Six Degrees, Erika Christensen ABC/Bob D'Amico

Any female who has seen Jay Hernandez will probably tell you she wouldn't mind getting stalked by him. And, okay, he's not exactly stalking 24-year-old film star Erika Christensen. But on ABC's new drama Six Degrees, he is lovestruck by her character after they share a chance encounter and then tries to track her down. "She's this elusive, enigmatic, troubled girl," says Hernandez, "and I'm like the puppy following her around."

Not a bad gig for Erika, huh? Especially given that Six Degrees, about interconnected New Yorkers, happens to be from Lost mastermind JJ Abrams and is airing in the cushiest spot on the tube: after Grey's on Thursdays, starting Sept. 21. And the show begins with one heck of a pop.

So, we have to talk about the opening scene of Six Degrees. They have you riding down a New York street on top of a truck...taking off your shirt.[Laughs.] Yeah, that was pretty nuts. It's like, "Hello! Welcome to our show!"

Are you worried what your parents are going to think of that?
They're already aware of it. They've seen the pilot, and they loved it. I mean, they know me so well. We're really, really close. And so they know that the person they see in movies or on TV is very different than this person right here--their daughter. They learned that a long time ago with Traffic. I was still underage then, and they were very supportive and protective to make sure I wasn't exploiting myself in any way.

Your character, May, is such a free spirit.
Absolutely. She's at a point where she needs to lay low, because she's sort of on the lam, and we don't yet know why. But she also wants to have a normal life, so she has these outbursts of freedom--hence, you know, the truck. [Laughs.]

You've done a lot of work in film. Why TV now?
I honestly think the writing is just so good there right now. This script was just amazing. And because it is a TV show, I get to live with [May]. I get to grow with her. And that's exciting. And it's also JJ Abrams, who I really think has the Midas touch.

Were you a fan of JJ's before now?
Definitely. I love Lost and Mission: Impossible III. I actually told him I throw around his name all the time now--like, "Oh, did I mention I'm working with JJ Abrams now?" I have no shame.
