Singleton Cleared in Fatal Accident

It was an accident John Singleton will not likely forget, but one that also wasn't his fault.

Los Angeles authorities have officially cleared the Boyz n the Hood director of any wrongdoing after Singleton struck and killed a female pedestrian with his car Thursday night in L.A.'s Jefferson Park neighborhood.

According to Officer Karen Smith of the Los Angeles Police Department, the victim was identified as 57-year-old Constance Russell of Los Angeles.

The spokeswoman said Russell failed to use a crosswalk and jaywalked across an unspecified street at approximately 8 p.m., stepping in front of the 39-year-old helmer's Lexus SUV.

Singleton waited at the scene until police and paramedics arrived. Russell was transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead early Friday morning.

Investigators did not cite the Oscar-nominated filmmaker for any violation after quickly determining that he was not speeding or under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time the accident occurred.

"He was not cited and appeared to be doing nothing wrong," Smith told E! Online. "A person was jaywalking, and it was just a very unfortunate accident."

At 24, Singleton became the youngest director ever to be nominated for an Academy Award, earning a nod for Best Director and another for Best Original Screenplay for 1991's Boyz.

He followed up with another inner-city drama,1993's Poetic Justice, starring Janet Jackson and the late rapper Tupac Shakur, and a pair of films about race relations—1995's Higher Learning and 1997's Rosewood.

His career took a more commercial turn in 2000 with the remake of Shaft, starring Samuel L. Jackson, and the urban drag-racing sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious. His most recent helming effort was 2005's Four Brothers with Mark Wahlberg.

Singleton has also made a name for himself as a producer recently, thanks to the indie success of Hustle & Flow, Black Snake Moan and Illegal Tender, which just arrived in theaters to positive reviews.

This fall, Singleton will begin shooting Tulia, a legal drama reuniting Oscar winner Halle Berry with her Monster's Ball costar Billy Bob Thornton, per IMDb.

He'll then segue onto the action caper Luke Cage, based on the comic book about a wrongly convicted African-American man who breaks out of prison after gaining superhero strength and becomes a superhero mercenary.
