Prinze's MTV Prom Invite
He's hasn't been a teenager in years, but that hasn't stopped Freddie Prinze Jr. from tapping into the Clearasil generation onscreen in movies like She's All That and Summer Catch.
Now, the 27-year-old perpetual youngster plans to target the MTV generation with a teen prom flick that he'll develop and write, but not star in, for the music network.
The as-yet untitled movie is part of a development deal Prinze has inked with MTV, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Up first, he'll pen the prom project with his writing partner Conrad Jackson with Stan Rogow (Lizzie McGuire) attached as executive producer.
"Conrad and I are excited and determined to create unique projects for MTV," Prinze told the trade.
The comedic telepic features the stumbling blocks encountered by a group of teens trying to organize a prom for a student body that's culturally diverse (no doubt the network that introduced us to The Osbournes will find a way to make this lesson in PC sensitivity a laugh).
"We are very excited to have Freddie and Conrad on board to develop this movie," MTV executive vice president of series and movie development Lois Curren said in the Reporter. "MTV has always been about attracting top-notch talent and aligning them with great projects and we're confident that this partnership will be a wonderful and creative match."
MTV had reportedly been interested in a project showcasing a modern-day prom and execs suggested the idea during a meeting with Sarah Michelle Gellar's hubby, who had expressed interest in being more than just a pretty face.
Prinze's spin on the story blew them away.
"I was so impressed with how he took a very broad idea for a movie and came up with a great story structure and all these wonderful characters to populate it," the Reporter quoted Maggie Malina, MTV vice president of original movies, as saying.
While tunes will naturally play a role in the music network's movie, it won't be a musical said Malina, who's overseeing the project.
Prinze, Jackson and Rogow have reportedly been looking to work together since the three met last year. This will be the trio's first collaboration.
However, it's not Prinze's first gig as a scribe. Though best known for his acting and a recent role on Friends' 200th episode as Ross and Rachel's "manny," Prinze has previously written an episode of the syndicated superhero series Mutant X.
But he's hardly giving up the day job. Prinze is reprising his role as Fred in Warner Bros, sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed, due out March 2004, and is in talks to star in the four-legged franchise's third installment, scheduled for a 2006 release.
